URU The Right To Be, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit content production company that tackles social justice issues via film, theatre, publishing, and other arts-based initiatives.
URU’s mission is to foster communication and understanding among diverse racial, social and economic groups about serious issues affecting those groups and their communities. URU believes that art is a powerful and dynamic source of expression and self-empowerment that can define and transform not only ourselves as individuals, but also our families, our neighborhoods, our communities, our countries and our global society. In order to foster communication and understanding, URU uses artistic expression, social marketing and community mobilization to deliver arts-based programs and productions about the social justice, health, culture and economic issues facing Americans and the global community.
URU traces its roots back to 1995, when a group of artists came together to explore ways in which to use their creativity and talents to give something back to their community in New Haven, CT. This collaboration, under the tutelage of its founder, author, filmmaker and social activist Crystal R. Emery, morphed into URU. Since then, the organization has made huge strides in bringing its message to audiences of all ages throughout the United States and the world.
URU is funded solely by donations and grants from individuals, corporations and foundations who recognize the importance of promoting education and social change, moving each recipient to a more human understanding that we are our brother’s keeper.
Open Season is the latest documentary from Crystal R. Emery and URU, and is currently in pre-production. Work is also underway on Master Builders of the Modern World: Reimagining the Face of STEM, a book honoring women and people of color who have made substantial contributions to the sciences, technology, engineering, and math fields.
The Changing the Face of STEM national education and engagement initiative
is designed to encourage children to seek careers in STEM fields despite
institutionalized lack of racial equity.
