The Changing of the Guard features four vignettes of STEM professionals who have directly broken barriers in their chosen industry. These individuals hold a range of identities: blind, Lebanese biologist, Mona Minkara, Assistant Professor, Department of Bioengineering, Northeastern University; Indigenous environmental scientist, Karletta Chief, Associate Professor, Environmental Science, University of Arizona; Bernard Harris, former NASA astronaut and the first African American to perform an extra-vehicular activity in space; and Hispanic mathematician, Edward Castillo, Research Scientist, Beaumont Health System Research Institute. By featuring STEM professionals representing intersectional marginalized identities as they address the stereotypes they overcame, we begin to promote an unlearning of these potentially internalized stereotypes.
